TDI: What kind of travel do you prefer for your own travels?

CN: My favorite destinations are Italy, Australia, and Israel, and in those places, I like traveling by land and staying in hotels. I like cruises as long as I can experience more port days—the more, the better.

TDI: What are some of your favorite destinations to send your clients?

CN: Wherever makes them happy.

TDI: What sort of travel do you find yourself arranging most frequently? What do your clients gravitate towards?

CN: Since I’ve grown with my clients, I’d say mainly cruises, and they gravitate towards longer cruises now.

TDI: In this day and age, why do you believe people should use a travel agent?

CN: We have so many connections with cruise lines, tour operators, and hotels that the average person just does not have. Our connections at Kahala Travel and TravelDesign International have offered the clients onboard credits, upgrades, and immediate notifications if and when cruises drop in price after a client has made a deposit. The latter is an example of the personal touch of a travel agent: a “box company” won’t call you and let you know.

Meet Kathy Lamb.

Kathy Camel Oman
Hello! Kathy riding a camel in Oman.

Kathy Lamb is a Travel Consultant for Kahala Travel. She has been a Travel Consultant since October 1994, and has been with Kahala Travel since 2004. She specializes in travel throughout Africa and in group travel. She has traveled to 120 countries and counting.

TDI: What kind of travel do you prefer for your own travels?

KL: I definitely prefer adventure travel. I have a great love of animals and prefer travel in the out of doors such as hiking trips, exploring remote areas of the world, and experiencing the cultures of third world countries. An example would be when I went horseback riding in Nepal in the Himalayas for three days.

TDI: What sort of travel do you find yourself arranging most frequently?

KL: I work the hardest and most frequently on organizing group travel. I do a lot of tours.

TDI: In this day and age, why do you believe that people need/should use a travel consultant?

KL: People should absolutely work with a travel consultant. There is a lot of misinformation out there about our fees, so I explain that clients don’t pay anything extra for us to arrange a trip for them*. The benefits they get from having us do their travel are huge because we can build the best trips for them, we are there to back them up if there is a problem, and we usually get much better pricing than they can get. It’s a no-brainer.

Spotlight: Leslie Wahlgren

Meet Leslie Wahlgren.

Leslie Lion Botswana
The lion sleeps tonight! Kalahari Desert, Botswana

Leslie Wahlgren is a Travel Consultant for Kahala Travel. She has been a Travel Consultant for ten years, going on 11 in May. She is an Aussie Specialist, a Luxury Specialist, and an Adventure Travel Expert, and has been selected as both a participant and Ambassador to Global Trade Marketplace, an Elite Travel Agent event, for the past 2 years.

TDI: What kind of travel do you prefer for your own travels?

LW: I love adventure travel with a “softer landing”. I’ll still go camping, but I’ve come to appreciate nice, boutique-style hotels. I love any destination off the beaten path.

Leslie Victoria Falls Zambia
Dancing in the falls – Victoria Falls, Zambia

TDI: What are some of your favorite destinations to send your clients?

LW: It’s hard to say, because it really depends on the client. I get the most excited about sending clients somewhere with an element of adventure. I love Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, and Africa. I was super stoked when I was able to arrange for a client to spend a night in Skylodge—a small, transparent capsule on the side of a cliff in the Sacred Valley, Peru! I tacked it onto the end of her trip.

TDI: What sort of travel do you find yourself arranging most frequently? What do your clients gravitate towards?

LW: My clients gravitate towards luxury adventure travel. I get to sell my passion. People gravitate toward something when you’re passionate about it, because you can paint that picture for your clients to see.

TDI: In this day and age, why do you believe people should use a travel consultant?

LW: Travel consultants offer their experience, meaning they can provide a perspective a client may not have considered. We know what questions to ask to ensure that clients can have the trip they envisioned. We have contacts all over the world, and so we can arrange travel to suit a client’s preferences in any given destination. We think outside the box. With more travel options available than ever before, we can help clients narrow down options. We don’t just put a trip together, we provide a service.
